Bluejay golfers play well but are edged by Tigers

CARROLL — A.A. Milne never visited Iowa, much less the United States. If the English author and playwright had, he might have described Tuesday’s golf outing between Perry and host Carroll as being played under what one of his famous characters might have called “a blustery day.”

That said, the wind and cool temperatures at the Carroll Municipal Golf Course did little to stifle the play of any of the 12 varsity golfers competing for the two teams as the hosts slipped off with a 153-160 victory.

Perry’s Noah Wilkening continued his impressive run of low scores with a medalist-tying one-under par 34, a round that featured four pars and two bogeys but also a birdie and an eagle 2 on the par-4 second hole.

“Noah played an outstanding round and then we had three others to complement his round nicely to give us our lowest round of the year,” Bluejay head coach Nick Field said. “With the way Jack (Brosnahan), Will (Whiton) and Connor (Nielsen) got their scores we can easily shot in the 150’s — that is, if we can get rid of the double and triple bogeys.”

Brosnahan had an eagle 3 of the par-5 first hole and had three pars, but two double and one triple-bogey pushed his score to a 41. Whiton had five pars, but was otherwise seven over par to shoot a 42, while Nielsen had three pars four bogeys and two double-bogeys to finish at 43, results which illustrated Field’s point while also highlighting the very real potential for lower scores.

Kade VanKirk had a 44 and Ryan Rathje a 46, but neither was used for the Perry team total.

Carroll’s Zach Riddle matched Wilkening with a 34, playing his nine holes with six pars, two birdies and one bogey.

Koby Paulsen (37), Jacob Norgaard (40) and Cole Moore (42) also scored for the Tigers, who did not use the 44 of Brandon Schimmer or the 48 of Chris Onken.

The Tigers won the JV meet in easier fashion, winning 160-206.

Zach Roberts (48), Tanner Darr (51), Tanner Duffy (51) and Dane McCarty (55) scored for Perry, with Brody Kimrey (66) and Luke Rathje (70) also making the rounds.

Drake Warner (38), Kyle Emery (39), Dakota Boyer (41) and Austin Fleener (42) provided the Carroll score, with Nathan Nelson (47) and Joe Eberle (49) also playing.
