Perry scored in five innings during their Raccoon River Conference baseball game with Winterset Monday. Unfortunately for the Bluejays, each of those were single tallies, leaving the hosts with a 6-5 loss at Progressive Field.

Winterset (7-9, 3-5) scored once in the top of the sixth to increase a 5-4 lead to 6-4, with the insurance run proving to be just that — insurance.

Perry (5-12, 3-4) promptly put their first runner of the bottom of the seventh when Adan Medina reached on an outfield error, but Brandon Kenyon’s line drive out to second base resulted in a double play. Alexis Garrido walked and stole two bases, with Austin Carpenter also drawing a walk.

Garrido eventually scored, and Perry had the tying run on third with two outs but could not bring the runner home and fell, 6-5.

The Jays scored in the first when Kaleb Olejniczak singled and scored on a Janier Puente sacrifice fly, with an Olejniczak RBI-single plating Aaron Lockwood, who had singled, in the second.

Winterset scored once in the third, but Garrido walked, stole a base and scored in the Perry fourth for a 3-1 lead.

Kyle Nevitt tossed the first four innings for Perry, allowing an unearned run on one hit and three walks while striking out six. He was relieved by Carpenter, who hit the first two batters he faced. Four consecutive singles and a walk followed as four runs scored while only one out was recorded.

Medina came in and shut the door, but was tagged for the final Winterset run (also unearned) on a walk in the sixth.

Perry has scored in the fifth to make it 5-4 when Puente singled and scored on a Carpenter RBI-base hit.

Puente pitched the final 1-2/3 innings, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out five.

Olejniczak had two singles, a walk, a stolen base and drove in a run while scoring once, with Puente providing a RBI and a single, as did Carpenter. Garrido walked, had two singles and swiped three bases, with Lockwood recording a base hit while Justin Stammer had two hits from the number nine spot in the lineup.

Perry squandered repeated scoring chances in each inning, stranding 10 total runners, including at least one in every inning. Five Bluejays were left standing on second base and three on third base.

Tanner Marquardt allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks in five innings. He finished with three strikeouts in collecting the win.

Brock Johnson earned the save, yielding one unearned run on a hit and two walks in two innings of relief.

Conner Van Pelt had a single and a double while driving in three runs for the Huskies, with Tolik Bartz providing a RBI-single and run-scoring ground out while Casey Young plated a run with a double.
