Molly the mule makes a strong fashion statement in her matching mulottes and halter, sewn by Jan Kaiser of Woodward and intended to keep off the pests.

Cool culottes are sometimes still worn by women during spells of hot weather such as the Perry area is experiencing now. An innovative livestock owner in Woodward has created a kind of split or bifurcated skirt for her mule that might best be called “mulottes.”

“After all these years, my textiles degree from ISU is really paying off,” said Jan Kaiser of Woodward. “Today I designed and sewed ‘donkey pants’ for our very expectant Molly. She was suffering from flies and these have been a help so far.”

Kaiser termed her garment “donkey pants,” which seems to imply that Molly is a jenny. Molly cuts a graceful if gravid figure in her part-halter-top, part-lounge-pants creation.

“Quite a fashion statement!” Kaiser said.
