A Celebration of Life service for Carolyn B. Atkins was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry.

Pastor Tim Johnson of the First Christian Church in Perry provided words of comfort. Honorary bearers were Carolyn’s grandchildren: Garrett Atkins, Connor Atkins, Brianna Atkins, Kane Atkins, Adam Atkins, Ariel Walker, Dakota Hoffman, Cheyenne Hoffman, Austin Carpenter and Ashlyn Atkins.

Soloists were Richard Gordon, singing “The Old Rugged Cross,” and Brianna Atkins, singing “Amazing Grace.” Chuck Schott was the pianist.

Interment will take place at a later date in Richland Township Cemetery in Bagley.

Carolyn B. Atkins, daughter of John George Hefley and Blanche Ione Steffen Hefley, was born June 20, 1947, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and died Sept. 6, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 68.

Carolyn graduated from Booneville High School.

Carolyn lived in Woodward and worked at the Woodward State Hospital School.

On Aug. 5, 1966, Carolyn and Lewis Francis Atkins were united in marriage. The couple was blessed with three sons John, Pat and Cory.

The family lived in Perry and then moved to Jamaica, where Carolyn and Lewis lived for the past 47 years.

She worked in healthcare all of her life as a CNA, restorative aide and at the Perry Lutheran Home. Five years ago, Carolyn medically retired.

She enjoyed bird watching, reading, gardening and canning. She loved nature, camping and sitting next to the fire and most of all being with her grandkids.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Dakota Hoffman.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Lewis Atkins of Jamaica; sons, John (Celestina) Atkins of Harker Heights, Texas; Pat (Jennifer) Atkins of Perry; and Cory (Richele) Atkins of Perry; nine grandchildren: Garrett Atkins, Connor Atkins, Brianna Atkins, Kane Atkins, Adam Atkins, Ariel Walker, Cheyenne Hoffman, Austin Carpenter and Ashlyn Atkins; brother, John George Hefley II of Alabama; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
