Memorial services for Catherine (Cathy) Grell, 66, of Woodward will be held Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry. Visitation will be Friday, April 10, with a PEO service held at 5:30 p.m. and the family available from 6-7 p.m. at the Granger Community Center, 2200 Walnut St. in Granger. Burial will be in the Cushing Cemetery at Cushing, Iowa.

Contributions will be given to Woodward Library Foundation, P.O. Box 510, Woodward, IA 50276 or Iowa Donor Network, 320 Adventureland Dr. NW, Altoona, IA 50009 and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home, 1721 Park St., Perry, IA 50220.

Catherine Irene Werner was born Aug. 2, 1948 in Watertown, S.D., to Harvey Charles and Irene (Goodin) Werner. She was united in marriage to Eugene Grell June 27, 1971 in Watertown. Cathy and Gene were married 43 years and truly best friends.

She was a graduate of Watertown High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Dakota State College in Madison, S.D., and was three hours shy of her Master’s degree in deaf education from the University of Iowa. She had 20 years of teaching at the Iowa School for the Deaf, Treynor Community Schools and A.E.A. substitute itinerant teacher for the hearing impaired. When Cathy became too ill to continue teaching, she served as sign language interpreter in Spencer and Newell Community Schools.

She was a member of the OZ P.E.O. sisterhood in Treynor, Iowa, and DE P.E.O. sisterhood in Perry. Her passion in life was teaching children to read. She was an avid reader and created beautiful cross stitch works. After retiring, Cathy and Gene moved to Woodward to be near their grandchildren.

Cathy died at Spurgeon Manor on March 24, 2015 from complications of liver and kidney failure. She will be fondly remembered and missed by her husband, Gene, of Woodward; son, William Grell, and wife, Kim, of Granger; five grandchildren, Jack, Katherine, Sydney, Elizabeth and Olivia; and a sister, Harlene Mitchum, and husband, Dan, of Fishers, Ind.
