A Memorial Service for Claudette Stampe, 92, of Jefferson was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Greene County High School Auditorium in Jefferson. Claudette died Nov. 24, 2016, at the Greene County Medical Center.

Officiating was Joseph Worley. Various Kingdom Melodies was the music chosen. Following the services, a luncheon was served at the Clover Hall located in the Greene County Fairgrounds. Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson was in charge of arrangements.

Claudette Doris Stampe, 92, passed away peacefully at the Greene County Medical Center Nov. 24 with loved ones present. Claudette was born Nov. 4, 1924 in Lewiston, Maine, to Joseph and Emelda (Grenier) Moreau.

She met her first husband, Arthur Robert May, when working in a family restaurant in Lewiston, and he was on leave from Newport, R.I. They were married on April 13, 1942, in San Francisco, Calif.

They resided in Newport until the end of World War II and then returned to Arthur’s hometown of Jefferson in 1946. To this union came eight children.

She met and married her second husband, Hans Marius Stampe, May 11, 1957, when he moved to the area from Denmark on a work visa. To this marriage came four children.

Claudette was a hard worker. As a teenager, she began working at a shoe factory in Lewiston. While being a loving and devoted mother, she later worked at American Athletic and Franklin Manufacturing in Jefferson. She also picked apples for Deal’s Orchard for approximately 20 seasons. She had various cleaning jobs in Jefferson until she retired in 2000.

She had abundant joy and love in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Claudette was a member of the local Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was very zealous in devoting many hours each month in voluntary ministry work.

Claudette is survived by her children, Gloria “Jeannie” May Clifford, Joseph (Carol) May, Claudette (LeRoy) May Sherlock, Susan (Larry) May Worley, Mathias “Mickey” (Lana) May, Daniel (Sheree) May, Teresa (Randy) May Manring, Karen May McCleeary, Susanna (Mike) Stampe Hoffman, Christian “Chris” (Peggy) Stampe, Kathrina “Kat” (Kelvin) Stampe Zieser and Paulette Stampe; 36 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; other relatives; and spiritual friends.
