Dallas County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Gene Krumm has issued a fact sheet to inform Dallas County voters residing in incorporated towns about the Tuesday, Nov. 3 regular city elections.

Polls will be open Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In order to vote in the regular city election, a voter must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age, not currently judged by a court to be “incompetent to vote” and not a convicted felon.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 election is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The Dallas County Auditor’s office will be open Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After Oct. 23, new voters can still register up to and including on Election Day at the polling place in the precinct where they live.

Newly registering voters will need to show proof of residency and identity. One form of identification that also proves residency is a valid Iowa driver’s license showing the voter’s current address.

A voter’s place of residency can be proved with a hard copy — electronic copies are unacceptable — of one of the following:

  • Property tax statement
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check
  • Other government document

A voter’s identity can be proved with a currently valid photo identification that contains an expiration. Among the valid hard-copy documents proving identity are:

  • Out-of-state driver’s license
  • Non-driver identification card
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military identification card
  • Identification card issued by employer
  • Iowa high school or college identification card

Voters can pre-register at the Dallas County Auditor’s office, 910 Court St. in Adel, on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration forms can also be found on the Dallas County website  or on the website of the Iowa Secretary of State. Send completed forms to the Dallas County Auditor, 910 Court St., Adel, IA 50003.

A voter may change his or her name, party and address at any time up to and including on election day if he or she is already registered in Dallas County. Prior to election day, changes are made by the same means as voter registration. On election day, changes may be made at the voters’ polling place.

If the voter has changed his or her address, the voter will need to go to the polling site of the new address.

Absentee votes may be cast at the Dallas County Auditor’s office from Oct. 1 to Nov. 2, the day prior to the election. The Dallas County election office will be open daily for absentee voting from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Request forms for absentee ballots may be obtained at the Dallas County Auditor’s Office or on the Dallas County website.

All requests for ballots to be mailed must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Completed absentee ballots must either be postmarked by midnight the day prior to the election (Nov.2) or delivered to the Dallas County Auditor’s office before the polls close (8 p.m.) on election day.

Residents of Clive, Grimes, Urbandale and West Des Moines should contact the Polk County Elections Office at 515-286-3250.
