Prevention pros of body and mind were available Saturday at the annual DCH/Hy-Vee health fair.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure — and maybe more than a pound if the American Health Care Act of 2017 passes and forces 38 percent of non-elderly adult Iowans off of Medicaid, as predicted.

That is why the Dallas County Hospital and the Perry Hy-Vee sponsors their annual free health fair: to prevent illness before it bankrupts the ill. Saturday annual event in the Hy-Vee parking lot, free and open to the public, featured free blood pressure checks and a variety of other free medical screenings.

Also available were body-fat analysis and balance tests. Information and training in hands-free CPR, mammograms, dental education, care coordination, physical therapy and other health services rounded out the fair.

The LifeServe Blood Mobile was also on hand and served a steady stream of donors thanks to Hy-Vee’s “Give a Pint, Get a Pint” promotion, which gave a free pint of ice cream to everyone who donated a pint of blood.

Hy-Vee Community Event Coordinator Larry Vodenik’s challenge to the Perry media to donate blood was also answered, with several KDLS staffers taking one for the team. Don Thomas of Gatehouse Media was seen, apparently waiting for his appointed donation time. A full 50 percent of ThePerryNews.com staff donated freely.
