The Perry Lutheran Home will launch the first in its new series of informative seminars Tuesday, May 23 with a timely topic: “How to Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones from Financial Scams.”

The topic is so popular and relevant that two seminars are planned, with a noon session to include lunch and a 5 p.m. seminar to provide snacks. The same material will be covered in both sessions.

The seminar will be led by Consumer Protection Division Investigator Al Perales of the Iowa Attorney General’s office. Topics will include the different kind of scams, how to protect yourself from scammers and what to do if you or your family member become a victim.

“Unfortunately, we have seen this happen to family members of our residents,” said Melissa Gannon, Perry Lutheran Home business manager. “With this seminar, even if we help prevent one person from becoming a victim, it’s worth it.”

The monthly seminar series will typically fall on the second Tuesdays and be offered either over the noon hour or in the evening, according to Mollie Clark, Perry Lutheran Home marketing director.

Clark said the seminar locations will vary from Lutheran Home’s main campus on Willis Avenue to the Spring Valley campus next to Dallas County Hospital to other locations in Perry.

The aim of the seminar series — called the Aging Well series — is to will help seniors and the family members of seniors navigate the issues of aging. Seminar topics will range from financial scam protection to living safe at home to recognizing the signs of dementia.

“As leaders in the field of senior care, it is our role to help educate family, friends and members of the community to better plan, prepare and be comfortable with the process of aging,” says the Rev. Max Phillips, chief executive officer of the Perry Lutheran Home.

The Aging Well seminars are free and open to the public. To attend Tuesday’s inaugural seminar, whether at noon or 5 p.m., call or email your RSVP to Melissa Gannon at 515-465-5342 or melissa.gannon@perrylutheranhome.org. Include number of attendees and the time you will attend.
