Woodward-Granger's Emma Drake (9) runs in the 800 at the 2017 state meet. Drake will lead off both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays in her second trip to the state meet.

DES MOINES — Woodward-Granger freshman Emma Drake competed in her first Class 2A State Track Meet individual event Saturday when she ran in the 800 at Drake Stadium.

Drake had run the opening leg of the 4×800 Thursday, where she was joined by Kaitlyn Peters, Anna Tague and Natalie Helbling. The foursome finished 23rd in 10 minutes, 33.45 seconds, a drop of nearly two seconds from their state qualifying time.

The Hawk frosh entered Saturday’s 800 with the 11th-fastest seed time. As did the 4×800, Drake also improved upon her qualifying time.

Although finishing 11th, Drake shaved 1.35 seconds off her entry time by crossing in 2 minutes, 25.13 seconds.

The two races were the lone state qualifiers for W-G, who did not have any boys event advance. Drake and Helbling are freshman. Tague is a sophomore and Peters a junior, leaving plenty of promise for next spring.
