Don’t let the name of this 53-year-old non-profit organization throw you off. Employee and Family Resources (EFR) helps people who are not currently employed, and it is also there for single individuals whose problem isn’t a “family” issue.

EFR focuses on prevention of unhealthy behaviors as well as offering student assistance, workplace training and counseling.

Here in Dallas County, you may walk into their office at 1212 Second St. in Perry anytime. Bilingual therapist Francine Ybarra-Rojas is available for counseling by calling 515-471-2417.

Prevention services offered by EFR include education and support with problem gambling, substance abuse and violence. Our contact person is Allison Kupka, available at 515-471-2399 or akupka@efr.org.

Kupka can arrange for anything from paycheck stuffers on quitting smoking to a full-scale staff presentation on the slippery slope of wagering that leads to problem gambling.

Besides information on preventing bad behaviors, EFR also promotes good behaviors. The EFR library offers employers access to free workplace training on leadership, diversity awareness, personality differences, active listening and many more topics.

Additionally, EFR can help companies who have experienced a crisis such as on-site accidents, an assault or robbery on the job or a large lay-off of staff. Particularly if your company is required to hold specific employee trainings, contact EFR for free assistance.

Don’t reinvent the wheel. Rely on EFR’s 50+ years of experience.

The EFR student assistance programming is similar to what is offered for employees but is age-appropriately geared to students from kindergarten through high school. Even young children experience stress and relationship problems, and EFR can equip them to deal with these.

Established in 1964 in Des Moines, EFR is the only Iowa affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Their mission is to help people manage life’s challenges so they can reach their full potential.

The EFR website offers a wealth of resources. For instance, if you click on the “workplace services” circle and then on the “training” circle, you will come to a page that says, “Click here to view the list of our Training and Development Course Offerings.” The list changes, but here is what it listed Friday, March 10.
