Mike Reeser, left, of Info Dog Security and his grandson, Carter Curtis, center, joined Perry Public Library Director Mary Murphy for last year's free paper-shredding service. The service will be offered again Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. until noon at the library.

Perry residents can unload their sensitive and confidential papers today and see them safely shredded into oblivion at a free paper-shredding event at the Perry Public Library.

The event is free and lasts until noon. Sponsored by the library, Spencer-based Info Dog Security and the Raccoon Valley Bank, the shredding truck is parked between the library’s south entrance and the Des Moines Area Community College Perry VanKirk Career Academy building.

“This is one of the library’s many free public services,” Murphy said. “The crowd today has been coming in spurts.”

No sooner had Murphy said this than Gary Becker of Perry, a local retiree, dropped off a couple of boxes full of paper matter. He was soon followed by Perry’s Third Ward City Council member Barb Wolling with two boxes of papers in her trunk.

“These have been in my attic for years,” Wolling said. “Am glad to see them go and glad to see Mary and the library offering this service.”

Mike Reesner, a retiree from south Indianola, and his grandson, Waukee High School senior Carter Curtis, take the shredding truck to spots around Des Moines and Creston five days each month, Reesner said.

“It’s a good way to make some extra money on the weekends,” Curtis said. He said he also works at Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza restaurant in Clive.
