Friends of NRA to host Saturday banquet in Adel

The number of attendees at banquets of the Raccoon Valley Friends of the National Rifle Association has seen a significant decline over the past few years. One possible reason is because many people do not really understand the purpose of the Friends of the NRA and so don’t make their events a priority.

These clubs teach the importance of responsibility and safety among other firearms skills. The FNRA meets every January to vote on where to distribute the funds, with 50 percent staying in-state and 50 percent going to national shooting sports.

“Last year a total of $190,000 was donated between all the clubs,” according to Dan Brubaker, a member of the Raccoon Valley Friends of the NRA.

Brubaker said a common misconception is that the Friends of the NRA are trying to recruit members for the National Rifle Association, but the two groups are independent of each other. While the Friends do display a wide variety of NRA items at their events, he said, the gear is actually purchased by the Friends and then auctioned off or given away as raffle prizes during the banquets.

The next Friends banquet is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at 5 p.m. at the Raccoon Valley Sportsman Club in Adel. Tickets are $30, and the menu includes prime rib, baked potato, green beans and apple crisp.

“It would be a good turn out if we got 150 people there on Saturday,” Brubaker said.

There is no age limit or membership requirement to attend a Friends of NRA banquet. The events are open to the public, with the simple request that you RSVP if you plan on attending so they can make sure to have enough activities, merchandise and food for all the guests.

Brubaker said this year’s event will feature a shooting contest before the banquet, starting at noon. This means you can bring your own firearms and ammunition and try your hand at games and possibly win a free ticket to the dinner and auction afterwards. All firearm laws apply. The games that are scheduled are Poker, Hit the Dot, Trap and Fur and Feather.

Typical items that can be found on the display tables are rifles, revolvers, pistols, camping gear, jewelry and rustic home décor along with other sport hunting-related collectibles. All profits from the banquets go to a grant fund that is donated to youth shooting clubs.

  1. Quite possibly, but I will tell you this, she was NOT there, but it was a nice evening! In hindsight, the auctions were very reasonable on most. I should have bid.

  2. Well, maybe it’s a 30-40 Yellow Boy. Anyway, as far as the young lady is concerned, it sounds like a clear case of “bait and switch.”
