Hawk to toe the rubber in four-day Senior All-Star Series

W-G ace Spencer Hanson was chosen by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association as one of four pitchers for the Small School West squad in the Senior All-Star Series. The four-game rotation begins Thursday in Waukee.

GRANGER — Woodward-Granger hurler Spencer Hanson was one of four pitchers selected to play for the Small School West squad in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Series.

The series is a four-day extravaganza of events and games, beginning Thursday when players check in to the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines. Thursday will feature a quick practice for each of the four teams, with the Small School East facing Large School East at 5 p.m. at Waukee, with the Small West vs. Large West game to follow.

Players will meet, and bowl, at Warrior Lanes in Waukee at 9 a.m. Friday, with Small West to play Large East at 1 p.m. in Waukee, with Small East battling Large West in game two. The All-Stars will then attend at Iowa Cubs game at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s action moves to Johnston, with the Small Schools dueling at 11 a.m. and the Large Schools afterward. Both will be special nine-inning games. An Honors Banquet at the Sheraton will be held at 7 p.m.

Ankeny will host Sunday’s consolation game at 10:30 a.m., with the championship to follow at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The Small School West team head coach is J.R. Gebhart of Saydel, with Frank Sefrit of Bedford and Dan Wendel of Alta-Aurelia assisting.

Hanson was 10-1 on the mound for W-G this season with a 1.06 ERA. He was recently named to the Class 2A All-State Second Team by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

W-G was 29-6 this season, winning the WCAC at 15-1. The Hawks are coached by Eric Evans.
