GUTHRIE CENTER — The Woodward-Granger girls used a strong second half effort on both ends of the court to record a 43-29 West Central Conference win over host AC/GC Friday.

Mary Hansen and Riley Jamison each splashed a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter as W-G (5-7, 3-5) claimed a 12-10 lead, with both teams unable to do anything with the ball in the second frame, with the halftime score 15-14 in favor of the guests.

A solid defensive effort after the break led to numerous easy scoring opportunities for the Hawks, who used a 17-7 scoring spurt to open a 32-21 lead.

“We extended our defense by using three different press looks and we were able to deflect about a dozen passes, turning many of those into steals,” W-G head coach Gary Dresback said. “The led to three or four layups and free throw opportunities when they fouled us attacking the basket after a steal, and that was the difference on the scoreboard.”

“I thought we played really good defense in both halves, as their scoring would indicate,” he added. “It was a great team effort on that side of the ball. AC/GC has some size and we were in great help position all night, limiting their ability to get the ball into the posts, and that was key.”

AC/GC (3-7, 2-5) was led by Madison Berger’s 16 points.
Hansen finished with 20 points and Jamison with 11 for W-G, with Alyssa Bice providing six points, Kayley Dresback three, Kendra Husmann two and Maggi Mallon one.
Eleven rebounds from Hansen was a team-high, with Jamison grabbing five board and Dresback and Mallon three apiece. Dresback had four assists and two steals, with Bice making four steals, Hansen three and Jamison and Husmann two each.
“I know that Mary led us in points, as she should, but this was a good team win,” coach Dresback said. “Our defense was very good, because we worked together and were in good position all night. This was as complete a game as we’ve played this season, with only the first half troubles hitting shot the only part that I would say could have improved much.”
W-G will visit West Central Valley Tuesday before hosting Des Moines Christain Friday in their next two contests.
