Hawk harriers compete Monday at Bomber Invitational

HUXLEY — Woodward-Granger sent boys and girls varsity and junior high cross country teams to Monday’s Ballard Invite, with the Hawk boys also competing in the junior varsity race.

The W-G boys were eighth in a field of 10 in the varsity competition with 220 points. Carlisle won with 27 points, with Woodward Academy (54) second and ADM (58) third.

Alex Bice, Chandler Cavanaugh and Caleb Jones finished in 20 minutes, 27 seconds, 20:29 and 20:31, respectively, to place 38-39-31 for the Hawks. Kaya Bowlsby was close behind, finishing 45th in 20:45 while Keith Braunschweig was 57th in 21:52. Hunter Pierce (58th, 22:00) and Cody Garland (59th, 22:06) also ran for the varsity.

Carlisle had 18 points to easily claim the boys JV race, with Ballard (51) second, ADM (84) third and W-G eighth of nine with 222 points.

Dylan Steele (28th, 22:26) and Sam Peterson (42nd, 23:35) led the way, with Kurt Crouse (48th, 24:22), Nick Busch (50th, 24:27) and Kainen Fuson (54th, 25:40) also scoring. Running for the JV as well were Cole Theisen (55th, 26:03) and Logan Roll (56th, 26:46).

The Hawk girls were sixth in a six-team varsity field with 134 points. Norwalk (35), Ballard (46) and ADM (51) claimed the top three spots.

Natalie Helbling and Posey Robinson were 19-20, in 25:12 and 25:31, respectively, with Chloe David 24th in 25:58. AnnaMae Hanson was 35th in 32:26 and Emily Lingner 36th in 36:39 while Hannah Lingner crossed 37th in 37:33.

ADM (37), DC-G (77) and Carlisle (100) won the boys junior high race, with W-G 11th of 11 at 284.

Alex Foster finished the two-mile course in 14:01 for 42nd, with Carsten Wright 51st in 14:31 while Joel Harney was 59th in 15:04. Also scoring were Parker Griffin (63rd, 15:55) and Landon Bogardus (69th, 16:50), with Lucas Hanson (71st, 17:00) and Ryan Fitch (72nd, 17:24) also running the course.

The junior high girls race saw the top three team spots fall to DC-G (43), Ballard (75) and ADM (77), with W-G seventh of 10 at 168.

Makayla Hanna (21st, 14:17), Sydney Grell (28th, 14:54) and Katie Grell (34th, 15:25) were the first three Hawks to finish, with Makenzie Dresback 37th in 15:43 and Kaitlyn Smith 48th in 16:54.

W-G was scheduled to compete Thursday at Roland-Story but will not so students can participate in the Homecoming parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. The Hawk return to action Sept. 28 with a visit to the West Central Valley invite.
