Woodward-Granger senior Spencer Hanson was named to the Class 2A All-State Second Team Sunday by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

GRANGER — Woodward-Granger senior Spencer Hanson had a record-breaking season on the diamond for the Hawks this summer, and was rewarded for his exploits by the Iowa Newspaper Association Sunday.

The Hawk standout was selected for a Utility spot on the Class 2A All-State Second Team after helping lead his team to the Substate Finals. W-G started the season with a 25-game winning streak and finished 29-6 overall while winning the WCAC with a 15-1 mark.

Hanson set a school record for pitching wins in a season by finishing 10-1 on the mound. He tossed 66 innings and posted an ERA of just 1.06. Opposing batters hit just .177 off Hanson, who issued only 15 walks while striking out 70.

He was 44-of-98 at the plate for a team-high .449 average, smacking a total of 44 hits, which included seven doubles, four triples and two home runs. Hanson drove in 38 runs, scored 36 and drew 20 walks while being plunked with pitches six times.

A perfect 13-of-13 in stolen base attempts, Hanson led W-G in both on-base (.543) and slugging (.663) percentages.
