LEON — Woodward-Granger dominted the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball to score an unexpectedly easy 42-0 win over host Central Decatur in Class 1A District 5 play Friday.
W-G (3-1, 2-0) scored at a steady pace, leading 22-0 at the half and cruising from there. The Hawks ran for 280 yards on 49 carries, scoring five times on the ground, with a 13-yard bolt form Austin Scharlau the longest scoring run of the game.
Hawk quarterback Brendan Bird threw a 56-yards touchdown to Josh Saak, but misfired on his nine other passes, which included a pair of interceptions.
Payton Tague ran 12 times for 105 yards and a score, with Scharlau scoring twice on nine carries that totaled 48 yards while Saak ran into the end zone twice on 10 carries that accumulated 41 yards. Bird finished with 83 yards on 12 hauls.
Cole Carmen and Scharlau each had five tackles for the Hawks, with Joe Sturgeon making two sacks. Logan Canova, Carmen and Saak each fell on a Cardinal fumble, with Bryce Achenbach returning an interception nine yards.
Boothe Carter finished 11-20-1 for 77 yards, with Kolten Johnsen (5-24) his chief target. Carter ran 18 times for just 20 yards and Tyke Walker seven times for 19 yards.
Carter led the defense with an interception and seven tackles, with Tyler Davis and Gideon Porter each making six stops. Johnson had the other INT for the hosts.
W-G returns home Friday for Homecoming, with Interstate 35 (2-2. 0-2) the opponent.
