MADRID — Woodward-Granger nearly saw a four-run lead disappear Monday, but held on for a 9-8 win over host Madrid in WCAC softball, recording the final outs with the tying run standing on third base.

W-G (13-17, 8-5) held a 7-4 lead after three innings before tacking on a single run in the top of the fourth. Madrid (7-17, 5-11) countered with a three-run inning of their own to cut the Hawk advantage to 8-7, with neither team scoring in the fifth frame.

Hawk junior Kaycee Major opened the top of the sixth with a solo home run, her second dinger and 29th RBI of the season, to push the lead to 9-7.

Madrid used a single, and outfield error and another base hit after an out to plate their eighth run in the bottom of the seventh. A ground ball and pop up with the tying run only 60 feet away ended the game.

Riley Jamison tossed all seven innings to gain the win in the circle. She yielded eight runs on 10 hits, a walk and two hit batsmen while striking out four.

Major added two singles to her home run and finished with three RBIs, with Bree Lesch, Miranda Aunspach, Kayley Dresback and Jamison all recording a pair of hits, with Jamison driving in two runs and Lesch one while Aunspach scored three times and Dresback twice.

Kendra Husmann smacked a pair of doubles to go with a single, with Maggi Mallon and Katelyn Bandstra also providing base hits.

Trinity Heeren went the distance for the Tigers. She allowed nine runs on 16 hits and two hit batsmen while striking out two.

Heeren and Shelbi Raymond both had doubles to lead the Madrid attack.

W-G travels to Panora Wednesday to resume a suspended game from earlier this month, then will conclude their regular season with a Thursday doubleheader at Van Meter.
