Hawks sweep Bulldogs in postseason opener

WOODWARD — Five days after sweeping host Ogden in WCAC net play, Woodward-Granger swept the Bulldogs in their Class 2A Region3 first round contest Tuesday.

W-G (23-13) advances to the quarterfinal round Monday, where they will face host Tri-Center in Neola at 7 p.m. The Trojans (27-2) are ranked eighth. Monday’s winner will play in Neola Oct. 26 against the winner of the IKM-Manning vs. Fort Dodge St. Edmond match in the semifinal round. The Region 3 Final will be played Oct. 31 in Underwood.

Ogden (10-12) was eliminated after W-G rolled to a 25-15, 25-18 and 25-12 win Tuesday.

Julie Pitman had 11 kills and Ashley Gales 10 for W-G, with Alyssa Bice and Alissa Smeltzer providing eight kills apiece while Anna Tague had three kills and Emma Drake one. Drake finished with 27 assists, Kaycee Major four and Bice three, with Pitman tallying two assists and Gales one.

Gales had three solo blocks and one assisted block, with Pitman assisting on two blocks and Drake, Smeltzer and Tague on one apiece.

Libero player Major’s 19 digs were a team-high, with Drake making 11 digs. Bice had four digs and Smeltzer three, with Tague, Katelyn Bandstra and Marissa Pasker recording two digs apiece and Pitman one.

Bice served 12-of-13 with an ace, with Natalie Weaver 8-11-3 and Major 10-11-1.  Drake was 15-of-16, Tague 14-of-15, Bandstra 3-5-1 and Pitman 1-of-1.
