NEWTON — Class 2A No. 15 Newton was an unkind host to the Perry girls soccer team Tuesday, as the Cardinals scored a 3-0 victory. The loss was only the second time this season Perry (9-4) has been held scoreless, the first coming — ironically, at the Newton Tourney — on April 5, a 1-0 setback to Des Moines Lincoln.

Natalie Martinez had three shots on goal for Perry, with Jacqueline Guardado, Molly Lutmer and Syd Guerra also taking shots at the net. Selena Garcia had five saves in goal in the first half for Perry, with Carly Anderson stopping for shots in the second half.

Newton improved to 10-3 overall with the victory.

The Cardinals won the junior varsity game, which was also decided by a 3-0 margin.

Lexie Welch and Jennifer Alvayero each had shots on goal for the Jayette JV, with Anderson making six saves between the pipes.

The Perry JV was a 1-0 winner over Carroll Thursday, with Norma Alvayero beating the Tiger keeper with two minutes remaining to give the Jayettes the win. Hannah Peterson had five shots for Perry and Welch two, with Anderson making one save.

Perry visits North Polk Thursday before completing the regular season May 23 with a visit from Atlantic.
