Thursday’s Jayette Invitational did not, it is safe to say, turn out quite the way the Perry volleyball team had hoped.

Perry was in a pool that also included Coon Rapids-Bayard, Ogden and Panorama, with DC-G, Carlisle and Earlham in the second pool. All three Perry matches went three sets, with the Jayettes finishing 1-2.

One of the tiebreakers used to determine seeding for the first, third and fifth-place matches (aside from overall record) was points allowed, and while several teams were 1-2, having played nine sets came back to haunt the hosts, as they were the one team of seven not advancing to an extra match.

Perry’s Jo Diw hammers a kill against the Coon Rapids-Bayard defense as Gabby West (14) looks on during Thursday’s Jayette Invitational.

DC-G went 4-0 to win the invite, defeating Ogden, 25-14 and 25-11 in the title match. Earlham was a 25-21, 25-5 winner over CR-B in the fifth-place match. No report has been received of the outcome of the third-place match between Panorama and Carlisle.

Perry opened with a 16-21, 21-17, 15-11 win over Panorama before dropping a 21-17, 20-22, 7-15 match to Ogden. A 16-21, 22-20, 11-15 loss to CR-B left the Jayettes on the outside looking in.

Jo Diw swatted 33 total kills for Perry, with Isabel Saemisch adding 11 kills, Gabby West seven, Sid Vancil six, Adriana Eastman three and Mackenzie Ayers and Syd Guerra one each. Vancil provided 51 assists to lead the hosts.

Guerra’s 49 digs topped the team list, with Vancil providing 34 digs and Diw 21. Eastman finished with 18 digs, Magley Orellana with six, West with five, Ayers four and Saemisch three. Ayers, Diw and Saemisch each had one block at the net.

Ayers had three ace serves on an 18-of-19 effort, with Vancil 21-of-23 with one ace. Diw finished 17-22-2, Eastman 20-26-2 and Guerra 21-of-22, with Saemisch 3-of-7 behind the serving line.

Perry plays only four times in the next four weeks, all on Tuesdays, beginning with a Sept. 12 visit to Ballard. Bondurant-Farrar visits Perry Sept. 19, with the Jayettes at Carroll Sept. 26 before Winterset travels to Perry Oct. 3.
