Senior Haileigh Kenyon surges down her lane in the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay.

Des Moines East brought 28 swimmers to the MCB pool Tuesday to face the seven-member Perry team, with the greater numbers aiding the Scarlets in no small way in their 109-55 victory.

Perry opted not to compete in the 100 butterfly, but won five of the other 10 events. Roster size worked against the Jayettes in each event, as the Scarlets simply overwhelmed the hosts in both the number of placers and where, among the 3-4-5 spots, those swimmers finished.

The meet was not without several bright spots for the Jayettes, who continue to show a steady improvement as the season progresses. Perry posted five new personal-best times against DM East and swam competitively in each contested event.

“I was very pleased with how the team swam tonight,” head coach Jean Dowd said. “With all the potential distractions of Homecoming week there were several personal-best times (PB’s). Vivian Gonzalez dropped time in both the 50 free and 100 backstroke and Haley Vaughn in the 100 breaststroke. Haileigh Kenyon dropped time in the 200 free and Sadee Whitfield did in the 100 free.”

Kenyon twice came from behind to chase down and edge East’s Hannah Hall. The senior co-captain won the 200 free in 2 minutes, 15.39 seconds, besting Hal by 3.6 ticks, and later nipped Hall by .18 seconds in winning the 100 free in 1:00.63. Perry’s Breanna Peneger was fourth in the former in 2:24.46 with Whitfield fifth in the later in 1:11.04.

Junior co-captain Vaughn claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:34.34 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.81, with Jayette freshman Anna Ridnour fifth in the later in 1:34.81.

Perry’s other win came in the 200 free relay when Vaughn, Whitfield, Ridnour and Kenyon teamed to touch first in 2:00.38.

Gonzalez, Vaughn, Kenyon and Penenger were second in the medley relay in 2:18.5, with Gonzalez, Whitfield, Penenger and Breanna Ackerman third in the 400 free relay in 4:49.56.

Gonzalez touched second and Whitfield fifth in the 50 free in 30.13 and 33.01, respectively, with Gonzalez second in the 100 backstroke in 1:18.67 while Penenger was the runner-up in the 500 free in 6:26.67.

Although not scoring, Ridnour turned in a 2:37.54 in the 200 free, with Ackerman swimming the 50 free in 36.8 and the 100 free in 1:21.21.

Perry returns to action Tuesday with a trip to Grinnell.
