JEFFERSON — The Perry girls basketball team evened their record at 1-1 overall with an easy victory over host Greene County Tuesday by grabbing control early and waltzing to a 50-20 win.

The Rams tied the score at 2-all two minutes into the game before failing to score over the next 10 minutes as the Jayettes raced to a 15-2 lead after one quarter of play. Perry extended their lead to 17-2 before the hosts scored on three consecutive trips to close to within 17-8 with four minutes to play in the first half — the closest they would come the rest of the way.

Perry held a 22-8 halftime lead and continued to use a pressing defense Greene County was helpless to counter, resulting in an unofficial 28 turnovers for the hosts.

The guests widened their advantage for 43-14 after three periods of play en route to the win, in which seven different Jayettes entered the scoring ledger.

Jo Diw led the way for Perry with 14 points, with Taylor Lathrum adding 13. Emma Olejniczak scored nine points and Grace Marburger eight, with Mariah Duffy, Victoria Hegstrom and Alyssa Kruger adding one basket apiece.

Diw and Marburger each sank a pair of 3-pointers for Perry, with Diw pulling down eight rebounds while Lathrum and Hegstrom grabbed six boards apiece. Duffy distributed six assists and Marburger four, with Diw and Marburger making five steals apiece.

Laurin Lyons led the Rams with eight points, with Sunny Mobley adding six while Samantha Hardaway, Taylor Wessling and Regan Lamoureux provided two points apiece.

Both teams struggled at the foul line, with Perry sinking just 4-of-13 free throws and Greene County only 4-of-17. Perry connected on just 21-of-85 shots from the floor but pulled down 33 rebounds and made 22 steals, both numbers that helped overcome the poor shooting.

Perry will return to action Friday when they host Carlisle for their Raccoon River Conference opener. The Jayettes will then travel to Des Moines Christian Saturday. The junior varsity/varsity set against the Lions has had a time change, with the JV game, originally slated to begin at 6 p.m., now set for a 4:30 p.m. start with varsity action to follow.
