Perry head coach Gilmar Guerra has the Jayettes off to a 4-1 start despite not yet having the services of Natalie Martinez (on crutches), who had 30 goals as a freshman last season. Perry hosts Bondurant-Farrar Tuesday and Boone Thursday.

NEWTON — The Perry girls soccer team finished third at the Newton Tournament Saturday after losing, and then winning, by final scores of 1-0.

Des Moines Lincoln scored in the second half of the first game to nip Perry by the 1-0 final. Selena Garcia had eight saves in goal in the first half for Perry, with Janet Oritz stopping two shots after the intermission. Grace Marburger and Jacqueline Guardado had the only two shots on goal for the Jayettes.

Ortiz had four saves between the pipes in the second game for the Jayettes, a 1-0 win over PCM.

Syd Guerra had the lone goal in the contest, beating the keeper off an assist from Mariah McNamara. The goal was the first of the season for Guerra, with McNamara notching her second assist in the last three contests.

Perry is now 4-1 overall and remains 2-0 in Raccoon River Conference action. They will host a pair of key RRC matches this week, with Bondurant-Farrar to visit Dewey Field Tuesday while Boone will be the visitor for Thursday’s bout.
