June 16, 2017

  • An officer checked on an alarm at 204 W. Harrison Street. A worker had accidently tripped the alarm.
  • An officer assisted the Juvenile Court Officer at the courthouse by assisting in collecting a urine analysis kit from a juvenile.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 1000 block of E. Lincoln Way, resulting in Candice Louk of Jefferson being issued a citation for excessive speed.
  • An officer assisted a motorist who lost a round bale of hay from his trailer on Iowa Highway 4 about one mile south of Jefferson. The bale rolled into the ditch and was removed.
  • An officer investigated a backing accident in the 100 block of E. Monroe Street. Jeanna Keller was backing from off-street parking in her 2008 Dodge Caravan when Martha Monroe was backing from a private drive in her 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. Neither driver saw the other, and the two vehicles collided in the street. The officer estimated damages at $500 to each vehicle. Both drivers shared equally in fault, so the officer did not issue citations for unsafe backing upon a highway.
  • An officer was requested by the court to be present during a hearing at the courthouse.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 200 block of W. State Street, resulting in Jesse Hoyt of Jefferson being issued a citation for operation without registration.
  • An officer checked on the welfare of a dog at 402 W. Russell St.
  • Albert Coil requested a welfare check on a male at 205 W. Vest St. An officer made contact with the male, who was fine.
  • An officer investigated a backing accident at 106 W. Washington St. A 2015 Hyundai Sonata, owned and operated by Crystal Heard of Jefferson, backed into a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, owned by Amanda Brown of Jefferson and being operated by Joel Erritt of Jefferson, in a parking lot. Heard’s vehicle had a reported $500 in damage to the rear bumper, and Brown’s vehicle suffered a reported $1,000 in damage to the rear passenger door. The accident occurred on private property, so no citation was issued.
  • Jim Groves spoke with an officer about a civil issue occurring with a vehicle he supplies for his daughter. He was advised to seek an attorney.
  • Jesse Perrett reported an injured owl in the roadway near Westwood Drive and Grimmell Road. The owl flew away as the officer approached it.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 700 block of W. Russell Street, resulting in Kyle Peters of Jefferson being issued a citation for excessive speed.

June 17, 2017

  • A traffic stop was performed at Lincoln Way and Elm Street, resulting in Grace Jordan of Panora being issued a citation for failure to obey a stop sign.
  • An officer checked on an occupied van parked in the 300 block of W. State Street. The female occupant said she was sitting in the van smoking because her friend does not let her smoke inside the residence.
  • An officer removed a cat from a live trap at 108 E. Central Ave. The kitten was placed in the Animal Holding Facility.
  • Heather Garcia spoke with an officer about possible stolen items from her mother’s residence at 502 W. Lincoln Way. The officer is investigating.
  • Jake Ball spoke with an officer concerning a civil property issue occurring in the 1400 block of Lincoln Court.
  • Heather Shipley reported a mother deer and fawn trapped in a fenced yard at 912 W. Washington St. The animals were not present when the officer checked the fenced area.
  • Nellie Gustin reported criminal mischief to a swimming pool at 309 N. Maple St. It appeared someone sliced the inflatable pool with a sharp object.
  • The Union Pacific Railroad Police reported a juvenile on a bicycle playing Chicken with a train at the Cedar Street Crossing. An officer responded abut did not locate anyone in the area.
  • A traffic stop was performed in the 1900 block of N. Elm Street, resulting in Stephanie Royce of Grand Junction being issued a citation for excessive speed.
  • Hy-Vee reported a possibly intoxicated driver leaving 106 W. Washington St. An officer observed the vehicle and eventually performed a traffic stop in the 200 block of W. Harrison Street with the vehicle. The officer learned the driver was not impaired but extremely tired.

June 18, 2017

  • An officer located an open business door at 507 W. Wall St.
  • Pat Schiltz reported dogs barking in the 800 block of W. Monroe Street. The officer made contact with someone in the area who said the animal’s owner was gone. The officer asked the person to bring the dogs inside for now, and he would follow up with the owner at a later time.
  • An officer assisted a tenant who was locked out of an apartment in the 400 block of W. Greenewood Road.
  • An officer was advised of a vehicle being towed by chain near McKinley and Chestnut streets. The officer did not locate the vehicles.
  • June Bowers reported her son was in the hospital and believed someone was burglarizing his residence at 621 S. Cedar St. while he is gone. An officer checked the residence, which appeared fine. The officer advised Bowers he would provide extra patrol on the residence.
  • Jamie Coronado turned in an Iowa Driver’s License at the Law Enforcement Center that he found in Des Moines. An officer was able to contact the item’s owner and mailed the license back to them.
  • Michael Godwin reported harassment by text occurring at 303 S. Grimmell Road. Godwin complained of a female contacting him from a dating website. Both parties were advised to end contact with the other.

June 19, 2017

  • An officer issued a parking violation notice in the 900 block of W. Harrison Street for truck/RV/trailer parking prohibited.
  • An officer issued a parking violation notice in the 200 block of S. Georgia Street for vehicle parked facing wrong direction.
  • April Hopkins requested an officer at 504 S. Cedar St. for a verbal argument occurring with her husband. An officer was able to separate them for the evening.
  • An officer heard crying and screaming near S. Wilson and Monroe streets. He followed the sound to 301 S. Wilson Ave. and spoke to parents in the residence, who said their child has night terrors and was crying. The officer witnessed the child sleeping and crying while the mother held her. He thanked the parents and let them tend to the child.
  • An officer investigated a backing accident in the parking lot of 508 N. Elm St. Birton Davis was backing from a parking spot in his 2004 Ford Freestar Van but could not see around another vehicle parked in the lot and backed into a 2003 Saturn L200 owned by Jenna Byers of Churdan. The Davis vehicle had a reported $1,000 in damages to rear bumper, and the Byers vehicle suffered a reported 1,500 to the left rear corner of the vehicle. No citation was issued as the accident occurred on private property.
  • Carter Fetters reported a neighbor coming on his property and harassing him. He wanted her told to stay off his property at 307 E. State St. An officer advised the female neighbor of Fetters’ wishes.
  • Curt Hastings reported a vehicle parked two feet onto his property at 402 N. Vine St. The officer spoke to the resident next door,  and the resident moved the vehicle.
  • Brenda Malone advised of a house near Fareway where a small fire was burning outside the residence. Malone was concerned due to the strong winds at the time. An officer could not locate any open burning in the area.
  • Sandy Groves reported people shooting fireworks off near the 700 block of W. Madison Street. An officer spoke to a resident at 706 W. Madison St. about the complaint. The person said he would no longer be shooting them off in town.
  • A caller reported a barking dog in the 600 block of N. Locust Street. An officer could not get a response at the door to a residence in the area but will follow up with the animal’s owner at a later time.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
