To the editor:

With health insurance premiums on the rise and deductibles skyrocketing, not to mention the majority of insurance companies in Iowa abandoning the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), Iowans are growing increasingly concerned about healthcare for themselves and their family members.

The impending vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA) sparked the interest of a group of patriotic Iowans, such as Gary Leffler from West Des Moines, who stated, “The Affordable Care Act is not affordable, insurers are losing hundreds of millions of dollars and getting out of it, and premiums are skyrocketing for individuals. And, whatever happened to the promise, ‘You can keep your doctor’?”

Parading around the Neal Smith Federal Building on Monday afternoon, the group of patriotic Iowans demonstrated their support for the AHCA and chanted for U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst and U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley to vote “yes” on the bill.

    • Are we to infer those of us conservatives, Republicans or whatever are any less American or patriotic as a flag waving, religious rightist? Hmnn? I’m not so sure I appreciate the author’s tone. While I do not intend to be offensive, many of us anywhere to the left are getting really tired of the “Liberals hate America” garbage that creeps into much of the current rhetoric from the right. As for the Family Leadership Conference on July 15, might I suggest any and all who are not so enamored with our two senators and less so for the ACHA show up the event, too? The location: Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center (Formerly Vets Auditorium), 833 5th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. With respect for all and no malice intent, Nick L. Eakins

  1. Ernst and Grassley got lucky that there weren’t enough supporters to bring the destructive bill to a vote. They would have then been on record as to whether they support citizen patriots or their wealthy donors who were looking for a new entitlement.
