Lions honor old and welcome new members

Diana Benzing, past council chair of Iowa Lions Club District #9, was the guest speaker at the April 13 meeting of the Perry Lions Club. Benzing outlined Lions Club activities and told about international, national and Iowa programs sponsored by the Lions Club.

Her speech was followed by a 10-minute video on Lions Club activities.

The meeting also saw four prospective new member welcomed: Eddie Diaz, Allan Becker, George Eldridge and Mike Phelan.

The four most recent members of the Perry Lions Club were presented with Lions Club lapel pins: John Cruit, Doug Volz, Bob Roeder and Jim George.  Five-year membership pins went to Andy Bambrick,  John Andorf and Ray Harden, and a 15-year membership pin was presented to Jack Shelker.

John Andorf was also awarded a plaque for his service as club president from July 2013 to  July 2014.

Perry Lions Club President Dave Wright said 10 flags have been sold for the Lions-Optimists flag project, and the First Christian Church has donated $250 toward the project.  The Optimist Club is selling flags along Willis Avenue and the Perry Lions along First Avenue.

On April 27 the Lions will clean a two-mile stretch of roadside along Iowa Highway 141 west of Dawson. The clean-up project begins at 5 p.m., and at least eight members are needed to walk and two to drive the sag wagons.

“The more walkers we have, the sooner the project is finished,” said Perry Lions Club Secretary Ray Harden, who also received a five-year lapel pin at the meeting.

The next regular meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Hotel Pattee.
