Woodward-Granger head coach Eric Evans will help coach the Great Lakes 17U team in the National Tournament Identification Series in North Carolina for the second consecutive year.

GRANGER — Eric Evans just completed his fifth year as head coach of the Woodward-Granger baseball team.

Apparently coaching the Hawks is not enough to cure his baseball “itch” as Evans is currently in the Dominican Republic, where for one week he will help coach Team USA 18U. The squad, of 18-year old and under players, is comprised from among the best high school talent in the country.

Evans had just one day of rest before heading to the Caribbean, as he spent Aug 6-9 helping coach Small School West in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Tournament in Clinton https://theperrynews.com/w-g-ogden-stars-help-lead-small-school-west-to-second-place-at-tourney.

“I love baseball, love coaching it and being around the guys,” he said. “I get to help coach some of the best players in the country, too.”

When Evans returns from the Dominican Republic he will have only another short respite before leaving home again, this time for North Carolina, where he will help coach the Great Lakes 17U team in the National Tournament Identification Series. He also coached in the series last year.

The Great Lakes team is comprised of players from Iowa, Illiniois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin and will compete against other regional teams from across the U.S.

A Team USA squad of all-stars from the series will then reunite next summer to play overseas, usually in Europe. Current Chicago Cubs players Kris Bryant and Dexter Fowler and Anaheim Angels standout Mike Trout all played in the series in the past.

“It can be hectic,” Evans said of his schedule, “but if baseball is the cause I don’t mind.”
