Perry Police officers responded to the Dallas County Hospital’s report of Gilliam’s departure, but they did not find him in the vicinity.

Some two hours later, a person matching Gilliam’s description — a white male with dreadlocks — was reportedly seen at Casey’s General Store on east Willis Avenue about 6:30 a.m.

The suspect was spotted about 6:45 a.m. in a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of 11th and Record streets in Perry.

Gilliam apparently fled the vehicle on foot and was taken into custody by Perry Police Officer Matt Aswegan after a brief chase.

He faces charges of second-degree theft and third-degree burglary, according to the Perry Police Department. Gilliam is being held on $5,000 bond at the Dallas County Jail.

Radio traffic indicated Perry Police Department officers made contact with Gilliam’s mother and with the owner of the stolen vehicle shortly after the suspect was taken into custody.
