Kris McDermott of Jamaica, sales director with skin- and body-care company Mary Kay, is hosting a demonstration party at the Crisis Intervention and Advocacy offices in downtown Perry.

Kris McDermott of Jamaica volunteers at the Crisis Intervention and Advocacy service in Perry, and part of her mission is fostering the health, relieving the stress and affirming the self-worth of people–mostly females–going through tough times.

McDermott’s line of Mary Kay products serves this goal, and today’s Mary Kay display at the crisis intervention offices at 1111 Second St. in Perry is both her business and her pleasure, McDermott said.

She said she started selling Mary Kay about eight years ago when she saw how well her college-age daughter did selling the body- and skin-care products as a part time job.

“When I saw her get her first free car, I thought, ‘That’s pretty good for a part-time job.’ So I thought I’d give it a try,” McDermott said. She has also volunteered at the crisis center for several years.

Crisis Intervention and Advocacy offers a variety of services for people dealing with domestic violence or sexual assault, such as assistance with housing, an addiction support group for women called Women Ending Addictions for Life (WEAL) and programs for abuse and violence prevention for all ages.

Persons in need of assistance can call the 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Line at 1-800-550-0004 and the 24-hour Domestic Abuse Crisis Line at 1-800-400-4884.
