A mattress lying in the middle of the westbound lanes of Iowa Highway 141 was the proximate cause of a two-car collision Sunday about 10:20 p.m. near Bouton.

The driver of one of the vehicles involved said he was traveling in the fast or southernmost lane of westbound Iowa Highway 141 when he struck a mattress or futon bed that was lying in the roadway.

He said the impact caused the air bag in his vehicle to deploy and caused his vehicle first to enter the median strip and then to cross the roadway and strike a second vehicle then passing in the slow or northernmost lane of westbound Highway 141.

Both vehicles finally came to rest in the north ditch. The incident occurred just east of the U.S. Highway 169 interchange.

“My chest hurts a little,” said the driver who hit the mattress, “but it’s my thumb that hurts the most.” He said he was alone in his car when it struck the foreign object.

The conditions of the driver and passenger in the second vehicle are unknown at this hour. All were treated at the scene by medical personnel.

The Perry Police Department, Woodward First Responders, Woodward Volunteer Fire Department, Dallas County EMS and Dallas County Sheriff’s office responded to the incident.
