The basketball season for the Perry girls came to an abrupt halt Saturday, as visiting Denison-Schleswig held the hosts scoreless for two long stretches in posting a 47-35 victory in their Class 4A Region 2 semifinal.

Perry (15-7) managed to hold a 6-5 lead after one quarter after not scoring for the first four minutes of the game, but the Jayettes played with the ‘6’ on the scoreboard for over nine minutes, allowing Denison-Schleswig (18-5) to open a 17-12 edge at the half.

Points came slowly for the Jayettes in the third period as well, with the Monarchs using a 19-9 scoring advantage to take a 36-21 lead into the fourth quarter. The hosts never came close to cutting the lead to single digits in the final eight minutes and suffered the season-ending loss.

Alex Mohr and Jacqueline Ingram had 11 points apiece for the guests, with Sarah Heilesen and Jazlyn Beeck each scoring eight. Four points form Macy Waldemar, three from Caytlin Lee and two from Vanessa Gunderson capped the D-S scoring.

The visitors finished 13-of-21 at the foul line, with the home team connecting on 9-of-13 free throws.

Jo Diw led Perry with 11 points, with Molly Lutmer adding 10. Grace Marburger and Emma Olejniczak had six points apiece in their final games as Jayettes, with Grace Stewart adding two points.

Marburger, Olejncizak and Maddie West were the three seniors for veteran coach Mike Long’s club. Perry was 57-34 in their four years with the team.
