Stunning and brilliant, local naturalist Ray Harden's photographs are on display at the Carnegie Library Museum through Nov. 8.

Local naturalist and accomplished nature photographer Ray Harden of Perry will give an afternoon talk at the Carnegie Library Museum Oct. 11 on the phenology of birds. The talk complements a Carnegie exhibition of Harden’s nature photographs continuing until Nov. 8.

Phenology is not a word commonly heard. It is defined by Google as “the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.”

Harden said he took this picture of a dozing fawn in his backyard in Perry.

Harden has delighted Perry readers for two decades with his nature writings, which are informed by his long career as a science teacher in the Perry school system, his work with the Dallas County Soil and Water Conservation District Commission and the Raccoon River Watershed Association and his boundless curiosity and enthusiasm about the living world.

An avid birder, Harden will discuss our local bird populations and their relations with one another and with the central Iowa environment.

He will illustrate his 1:30 p.m. lecture with his own photographs, more than 100 of which are on display at the Carnegie Library Museum for one more month in a continuing exhibition.

The photo exhibition covers more than birds. By some estimates, 90 percent of Iowa’s native plant and animal species have been lost in the 200 years since the start of European settlement. Of those that remain, Harden provides many fine photographic examples.
