GUTHRIE CENTER — The Woodward-Granger baseball team is off to a 3-0 start this season, and 32 combined runs have done provided plenty of reason to smile.

W-G was a 12-1 winner over host AC/GC in six innings Thursday, and while the Charger pitching and defense may have provided plenty of unnecessary help to the Hawks, having eight players swat base hits did not exactly hurt the winning cause.

AC/GC pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone, with nine Hawks drawing at least one base and balls, with Marcus McConahay and Spencer Hanson each walking twice.

The fireworks were slow in coming Thursday, with W-G holding only a 3-1 lead after three frames. Three runs in the top of the fourth pushed the margin to 6-1, with two tallies in the fifth and four more in the sixth providing enough of a gap to end the game early after the hosts could not score at least two runs in the home half of the sixth.

McConahay left his mark all over the official book by driving in two runs, scoring three times and swiping four bases. Hanson, Matt Rhodes and Matt Buch both scored twice as well, with Rhodes and Cole Theisen also driving in two runs apiece while Hanson, Bryce Achenbach and Austin Scharlau also had RBIs.

Hansen and Theisen stole two bases apiece as part of 10 total thefts by the guests.

Freshman Brandon Worley earned the win on the bump in five innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Nick Brummond threw an inning of scoreless relief.

W-G hosts Southwest Valley tonight before embarking on a busy slate next week. The Hawks host Madrid Tuesday and Iowa Christian Academy Wednesday before visiting Clarke Thursday and then hosting their annual tournament June 3.
