JEWELL — A light rain and mist made for progressively treacherous footing at Thursday’s South Hamilton Invitational.

Gilbert won the girls meet with 65 points, with Panorama second at 81 and AC/GC third at 100. Gilbert’s 33 points won the boys side, with South Hamilton (77) second and Madrid (113) third. Panorama and BCLUW each had 268 points, but the sixth Panther runner was 74th and the sixth Comet runner 85th, giving Panorama 10th place in the 13-team field.

AC/GC’s Kate Crawford won the girls race in 19 minutes, 36 seconds, but Panorama’s Ella Waddle was only 18 seconds behind (19:54) in second place. She set a new school course record in the process, erasing Brianna Hoffman’s 2015 mark of 20:55.

Head coach Greg Thompson praised the depth of the girls team and noted Devyn Kemble had been kept out of the varsity race in order to rest the senior, as both the conference and state qualifying meets are coming soon on the schedule.

Thompson also praised the efforts of Panther boys harriers Richey, Wasson and Howard, noting all had shown “big improvements over previous races.” He also expressed his hope that the Panther boys were improving enough to have a shot at qualifying for the state meet.

Payton Beckman (2nd, 13:41), Laci Rishel (4th, 14:11), Grace Webner (18th, 15:17), Carley Van Gundy (46th, 17:10) and Ella Knapp (50th, 17:37) scored, with Abbi Holloway (55th, 19:02) also running.
