The new door on the north side of the Brick Street Bakery at 109 N. Ninth St. in Adel will soon open onto a brick-lined patio area planned for the store.

An Optimae Life Services construction crew surveyed and graded the area Tuesday morning, and post holes were filled with concrete Wednesday for the overhead structure.

The patio door was cut into the north wall in May by Galena, Ill.-based Renaissance Restoration Inc., the same company that helped restore the Dallas County Courthouse 10 years ago.

New on the Brick Street Bakery is the Donna Bar, baked in honor of Donna Grove, a longtime Adel resident and “white-haired, dynamic ball of energy and enthusiasm,” according to Grove’s friend Kay Struble. “She didn’t know a stranger.  She had the ability to convince you that you could do the impossible. She persuaded our Adel Women’s Club to create a cookbook. It turned out to be a great moneymaker.”

Grove died in 2014, but her spirit is remembered in the Donna Bar, available while supplies last at the Brick Street Bakery.
