Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Hamlin Bell apartment complex in Perry was a capstone on the three-year effort to make the senior housing complex a reality, a project that united the efforts of the city of Perry, Newbury Living and the Nudgers group.

About 30 people attended the afternoon event, enjoying refreshments and small talk prior to the ceremonies, which included breaking in the the Perry Chamber of Commerce’s new ribbon-cutting scissors.

The $7 million, 36-unit Hamlin-Bell Apartments stand on the site of the former junior high school in Perry at 2023 Willis Ave.

“We still have a few vacancies in the Hamlin Bell,” Newbury District Manager Sharon Wolfe told the ribbon-cutting crowd, “and we wanted to take this opportunity to describe some of the great features of our new building.”

Attending the Hamlin Bell ribbon cutting were the project’s developers, architects, engineers, financiers, managers and several city officials. Newbury Living, which owns and manages the complex, said it was grateful to the local non-profit development group, the Nudgers of Perry, who assisted Newbury in successfully landing low-income housing tax credits for the project.

The Willis Avenue Apartments at 913 Willis Ave., also managed by Newbury, was the object of a similar ribbon-cutting ceremony June 1.
