The city of Perry has issued the following announcements of upcoming events.

Winterizing the Perry Parks begins

Public restrooms in Wiese Park, Perkins Park and Pattee Park will be closed for the season on Friday, Oct. 23, the Perry City Hall announced Wednesday.

The restrooms and fountains at the Perry Dog Park and the baseball and softball fields have already been winterized and are closed for the season.

Open burning of yard waste starts Oct. 31

The fall season of open burning of yard waste materials begins Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. and ends Nov. 22 at sundown.

All open burning must take place between 10 a.m. and sundown.

All open burning is restricted to private property, in the rear of the property and must be supervised at all times.

All open burning must be at least 30 feet from any building inhabited by persons other than the landowner or tenant conducting the open burning.

The Perry City Hall encourages residents to find alternative methods to open burning for yard waste disposal.

All yard waste should either be:

  • placed in biodegradable paper yard waste bags with a maximum weight of 40 pounds or
  • bundled and tied in maximum lengths of four feet with a maximum weight of 40 pounds and set near the street curb in front of the residence for pick-up.

Place all yard waste at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of pickup.

Oct. 28 — Citywide yard waste pickup
Nov. 4 — Citywide yard waste pickup
Nov. 11 — Week of Veterans Day: No yard waste pickup
Nov. 18 — Final citywide yard waste pickup

Perry plans several city-sponsored Halloween events

The Perry City Council has designated Friday, Oct. 30 from 6-8 p.m. as “Trick or Treat Night” or “Beggar’s Night.” Please turn on your porch lights if you are handing out treats, and please drive safely.

Other Halloween activities on Friday, Oct. 30 include

  • Safe and Healthy Halloween event at Dallas County Hospital from 5-6:30 p.m., featuring fun and safe trick or treating,
  • Annual Trick or Treat SPOOK-tacular will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Perry which features safe trick or treating while showcasing our local businesses.

The Perry Firefighters Association’s “Haunted Barn” in the Farmers Market Building on the west side of Caboose Park at First and Willis avenues is open from 7-11 p.m. Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31. The cost is $5 per person.

MCB2Perry Parks and Recreation offers fall programs

Youth Basketball League:
This program is for boys and girls in grades second through sixth. Games will be played Saturday mornings, with practices held during the week. The league will run Nov. 14 to Dec. 19. The cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members, and the deadline to register is Oct. 26. For more information, contact the MCB at 515-465-5621.

Youth Basketball Camp:
This program is for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through first. Youngsters will learn the fundamentals and basics of basketball, including passing, shooting, dribbling, offense and defense. Practices will be held every Monday night from 6-7 p.m. at the MCB, with the opportunity to showcase the skills they have learned at a scrimmage on Saturday mornings. Volunteer coaches are needed to help players develop and improve their fundamentals. The program will run from Nov. 2 through Dec. 14. Parent and Child Swimming Lessons:
This class is offers a chance for parents to orient their children ages 6 months to 3 years to the water. The Perry Parks and Recreation Department class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Nov. 3 to Nov 19. Times are 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $13 for members and $26 for non-members, and the deadline to register is Oct. 27. For more information, contact the MCB at 515-465-5621.

Winter Swim Team:
The Winter Swim Team for ages 6 to 18 is a competitive swimming program for individuals who are able to swim the length of the pool using proper technique. The season will run Nov. 10 to March 5. Most swim meets will be held Saturday mornings, with practices held three days a week. The cost is $80 for first swimmer and $60 for each additional swimmer in a family. Vendors needed for November’s Holiday Craft Show
Vendors are needed for the McCreary Community Building’s annual Holiday Craft Show, Saturday, Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The vendor fee is $25 through Oct. 22 and $35 after Oct. 22. For more information, contact the MCB at 515-465-5621.

Veterans Day closings planned
Perry city offices, the Perry Water Works and the Perry Public Library will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. The McCreary Community Building will be open from 1 to p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, with the pool closing at 4:30 p.m. There will be no change to the garbage and recycle routes. There will be no yard waste pickup Wednesday, Nov. 11.
