Perry cross country makes trip to Newton

NEWTON — Westwood Golf Course was the site of Tuesday’s Newton Invitational, with Perry one a large field of teams in action.

The Perry girls were ninth in an 11-team varsity field with 274 points. Des Moines Roosevelt won with 41 points, with Southeast Polk (51) second and Grinnell (74) third.

Grace Stewart was well out in front for the Jayettes, leading the squad with a 31st-place finish in 23 minutes, 34 seconds. Hannah Peterson (57th, 27:46) was second for Perry, with Julissa Calderon (60th, 28:33), Cris Gomez (61st, 28:34) and Sophie Prombo (65th, 29:56) also scoring. Angela Hernandez (66th, 29:58) and Kat Munoz (70th, 31;27) also ran for the varsity.

DC-G (33), Grinnell (66) and Oskaloosa (94) were 1-2-3 in the boys varsity team standings, with Perry 10th of 10 at 285 points.

Eli Noble led the Bluejays by crossing 46th in 20:17. Eduardo Sanchez (56th, 20:53), Zach Stewart (60th, 21:08), Mario Cruz (61st, also 21:08) and Zachary Thompson (62nd, 21:31) capped the scoring list. Others running for the Jay varsity were Aaron Lockwood (63rd, 21:37) and Hayden McFarland (67th, 22:39).

The Jayette junior varsity had only three runners and thus did not generate a team score. SE Polk (27), DM Roosevelt (33) and Ankeny (84) were the top three placers.

Alondra Avila (37:20), Taylor Eppert (37:51) and Maria Izquierdo (41:24) competed for Perry.

DC-G had a near-perfect 19 to dominate the boys JV race, with Ankeny second at 53 whiel Grinnell won a tiebreaker over Pella for third at 97. Perry was ninth in a nine-team field at 284.

Gabe Ridnour was 53rd, in 24:07, and Beau Nelson 55th, in 24:26, to place the Jays. Jacob Prombo (57th, 25:37), Miguel Gonzalez (59th, 26:14) and Collin Malmberg (60th, 26:57) also placed, with Chase Archer (61st, 27:21) and Kyle Lockwood (63rd, 31:38) also in action.

DM Roosevelt (23), Indianola (58) and Grinnell (70) were the top teams in the girls middle school race. Perry, with just three harriers, did not create a team score.

Lydia Olejniczak crossed in 16:27, Pauline Galindo in 19:11 and Hayley Peterson in 21:43.

DM Roosevelt (65), Marshalltown (69) and Newton (75) were the top boys team finishers in the middle school race.

Cole Nelson (16:31), Gannon Meis (16:47), Tanner Burgin (17:27), Christian Garrido (20:17) and Shane Lear (22:51) were 51-52-54-57-59 in the placings for Perry, who was ninth of nine teams at 273.

Perry is off until Sept. 28 when they host the annual Leon Fox Invitational at the Perry Golf and Country Club.
