The Perry girls soccer squad hams it up before facing Des Moines Lincoln at the Newton Tournament om April.

NEWTON — The Jayette soccer squad bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Des Moines Lincoln to score two late goals and overcome PCM, 2-1, in their second game at the Cardinal Tournament Saturday.

Perry assistant coach Fred Niebaum said “the game against Lincoln had moments of brilliance, but we just could not connect at the right moments.”

Despite the loss and playing without four regular varsity players, Perry held tough to knock off PCM in their second game of the afternoon.

“The girls played very well in the second half (against PCM) and put passes together to take the lead and hold on for the win,” Niebaum said.

PCM held a 1-0 lead until eight minutes were left in the contest when freshman Sydney Guerra took a pass from sophomore Haley Vaughn and put the ball past the keeper to tie the score.

Sophomore Grace Marburger put the ball on K.C. Gafkjen’s foot mere minutes later, with the junior stretching the onion bag with the winning goal.

Perry goalkeeper Amparo Menendez turned away three Mustang shots after making seven saves against the Railsplitters in the opener.

Perry hosts Bondurant-Farrar tonight, Boone Thursday and Des Moines Christian Monday as part of a three-match homestand. Junior varsity play begins at 5:30 p.m. each date, with varsity action to follow.
