The Perry Golf and Country Club will serve as host site for Thursday’s only home cross country meet of the season for the Bluejay and Jayette harriers, the 16th annual Leon Fox Invitational.
The event is named in memory of the former teacher and coach at Perry. Fox, whose son Jeff is currently the Bluejay coach (Shaylena Bell coaches the Jayettes), started the program at PHS in 1985. He guided six different Perry teams — and over 50 individual runners — to the state cross country meet during his tenure.
Teams expected to compete Thursday include ADM, Bondurant-Farrar, Creston, Des Moines North, Greene County, Roland-Story, Saydel and Winterset.
The meet will begin with a two-mile boys middle school race at 4:15 p.m., with a girls middle school race to begin at 4:45. The boys varsity/junior varsity will run together, with an expected start time of 5:15. The girls varsity/JV race will follow, starting at 5:45.
The winning varsity teams will each receive a trophy and seven team medals, to be awarded after the final race. Medals will be awarded to the top 15 finishers in each varsity race, with ribbons given to the top 15 placers in each middle school competition.
