Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of fabric are spring shop-hoppers from the Perry Piecemakers Quilting Guild, standing from left, Bonnie Nelson, Shirley Ehlers, Sharon Prunty, Linda Andorf, Barb Ferguson, Mary Ann Holcomb, Marti Klatt, Rosella Hanson, Kathy Fox, Jackie Svetly, Mary Peterson, Diane Harland, Deb Gilbert, Wanda Brooks, Barb Hanson, Theresa Krueger, Lois Royer and Karen Taylor. In front are Joanne Warnock, left, and Lois Hoger.

In the spring a lady’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of — quilts. As evidence of this proposition, the Perry Piecemakers Quilt Guild made its spring shop-hop tour of Iowa quilting and fabric shops Saturday.

“We usually do spring and fall shop hops,” said veteran Perry Piecemaker Lois Hoger. “We just rent two vans, and off we go.”

This spring’s shopping circuit included stops in Bondurant, Newton, two stores in Brooklyn and another two in the Amana Colony.

Shopping is hard work, Hoger said, so each van is generously stocked with chocolate to each van in order to revive any flagging spirits.

As everyone knows, quilt trips can lead to guilt trips, so the Piecemakers are discrete in hiding their splurging indiscretions — from their husbands.

“Everything that happens on quilt trips, stays on quilt trips,” Hoger said, “unless the receipt is accidentally emailed home.”

The Perry Piecemakers sew for various charities and make many gifts for family and friends, but even the most selfless act of charity will have some little underside of self-pleasure, as economists and other sniffers out of self-interest assure us.

The Perry Piecemakers Quilt Guild is participating in the May 6 fiber art fair in downtown Perry, sponsored by Art on the Prairie.

“One more yard of fabric is like having one cookie,” Hoger said. “It’s never enough. It’s like a tour of fabric buffets.”

Splurging at the buffet will be irresistible Saturday, May 6, when the Perry Piecemakers Quilt Guild take part in an Art on the Prairie-sponsored fiber art fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Perry.

The quilters will perform hands-on sewing all day at the Perry Public Library, and a gallery full of members’ quilts will be displayed at the Citizens State Bank at 1124-1126 Second St.

Presentations by individual guild members are also planned, with Mary Ann Holcomb demonstrating quilting rulers with domestic machines at 11 a.m., Joanne Schnebly presenting ways to use your stash at 12:30 p.m. and Marti Klatt discussing “chicken linen” and vintage feed sacks at 2 p.m.
