Let the celebration begin! With tassles flipped from left to right on their mortar boards, the Perry Senior High Class of 2015 is all smiles Sunday.

A day 133 students had long been waiting for finally arrived Sunday, as 129 diplomas and four learning center diplomas were issued to the Perry Senior High Class of 2015.

A capacity crowd filled the PHS senior gym for ceremonies that began at 2 p.m. The graduates marched into the gym to the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” with music courtesy of the Perry Symphonic Band under the direction of Brandon Weeks.

After a brief address from PCSD Superintendent Lynn Ubben, the graduates were treated to a performance by the Perry High Mixed Choir, directed by Jenn Nelson. The choir — accompanied by senior Christian Loiaza on flute — and “Come Follow Me” by Don Besig.

Loiaza, Senior Class President, and Bluejay Congress President Sabrina Sweet each addressed their classmates, sharing humorous insights and memories and generating many laughs and smiles.

PHS Principal Dan Marburger recognized the 19 members of the National Honor Society, the Academic Top 10 percent of the Class of 2015 and those who received diplomas “with honors” earned by additional class and college preparatory work and 90 hours of community service.

Marburger then read the names of each graduate, who were awarded their diplomas by himself, Ubben, Perry School Board President Dan Wilhelmi and School Board Directors Marjean Gries and Kenia Alarcon.

The flipping of the tassles atop their blue mortar boards followed, which occasioned the blaring of numerous air horns and the spraying of many cans of silly string as applause greeted the smiling graduates, who filed from the gym for the final time as “March Triumphant” was played by the Perry Symphonic Band.
