Perry swimmers make waves at state meet

GRINNELL — PAWS (Perry Area Winter Swim) team had a successful Saturday at the Greater Iowa Swim League state meet.

Posting new personal-best times were 18 different Perry swimmers: Lilly Riley, Garrett Winey, Andrew Dowd, Ethan Winey, Drew Storey, Sophia McDevitt, Quin Mahler-Moreno, Jaylene Karolus, Sarah Vaughn, Haley Vaughn, Caleb Winey, Dannah Karolus, Riese Archer, Maddie McDevtt, Aleah Karolus, Emily Dowd, Amanda Holwegner and Owen Royer.

Sophia McDevitt (9-10) won the 100 Individual Medley, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, setting new GISL state meet records in all three.

Quinn Mahler-Moreno and Garrett Winey were chosen as All-Star representatives by the Perry coaching staff, with Stacy Vaughn recognized for her volunteer efforts.

Haley Vaughn, Sarah Vaughn, Abby Herman, Jaylene Karolus, Quinn Mahler-Moreno, Sophia McDevitt and Lilly Riley will be joined by Devon and Riese Archer in competing at the Regional Meet March 25-26 in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

The first sign-up date for the Perry Summer Swim Team will be held April 8 from 12-2 p.m. at the McCreary Community Building.
