NEWTON — Perry swam for the fourth time in an eight-day stretch Tuesday when the competed in a triple-dual with the hosts and Oskaloosa.

Newton topped Oskaloosa, 72-20, and Perry, 68-34, but the Jayettes were 42-39 winners in the head-to-head against the Indians. Perry had outscored Oskaloosa, 183-153, at Saturday’s Des Moines North Invitational, but wanted revenge for a 47-42 triple-dual loss to the Indians last Thursday in Indianola.

The Jayettes were without freshman sprinter Dannah Karolus at Indianola, and her return to the lineup resulted in a flip of eight points in Perry’s favor, enabling the Jayettes to return to PHS and ring the victory bell.

The Newton pool features lanes 25 meters in length as opposed to 25 yards, creating slower times as each 50-meter race was 4.68 yards longer than normal; each 100-meter race was thus nearly 9-1/2 yards longer. The meet held a 400-meter freestyle as opposed to a 500-yard race, and Perry’s Breanna Peneger was second to Newton and first against Oskaloosa in the event in 5 minutes, 19.5 seconds.

Karolus was 2-1 (against Newton/Oskaloosa) in the 100 free in 1:14.82 and 3-1 in the 50 free in 32.88, with Avery Miner third against Oskaloosa in both on clockings of 1:17.64 and 35.92. Kaira Francis swam a 44.04 in the junior varsity 50 free for the Jayettes.

Haley Vaughn was twice a double-winner for Perry, claiming the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke against both opponents with times of 2:44.46 and 1:17.39.

Penenger placed 2-1 in the 200 free in 2:34.04, with Anna Ridnour third to the Indians in 2:47.87. Ridnour later finished 3-2 in the 100 breaststroke in 1:37.85.

The 200 medley relay team of Penenger, Miner, Haley Vaughn and Sarah Vaughn was 3-2 in 2:36.52, with both Vaughn sisters joined by Ridnour and Karolus for a 2-1 effort in the 200 free relay after touching the pad in 2:12.

Sarah Vaughn, Miner, Karolus and Penenger capped the meet with a 3-2 showing in the 400 free relay at 5:00.56.

Perry was disqualified in the 100 butterfly, but with no Oskaloosa entrant in the race the lack of points for each team nullified the other.

A welcome break is on tap for Perry, who will not compete again until hosting Grinnell and Algona Tuesday, with Des Moines North and Des Moines Hoover to visit next Thursday. Both triple-duals will begin at 6:30 p.m.
