Perry tops Treynor, falls to host Atlantic in Saturday action

ATLANTIC — Saturday started well for the Perry baseball team. How it ended was another matter entirely.

Perry opened play in the Atlantic Tournament with a 5-2 win over Treynor, then dropped a 10-3 decision to Atlantic, who scored six times in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away for the win.

Brett Daley doubled to open the top of the first in game one, with a hit batsman and an outfield error after a base hit allowing Treynor to open a 2-0 lead.

Will Whiton singled, stole second and scored on a Zach Roberts double as Perry halved their deficit in the bottom of the first. Nic Wilhelmi and Roberts singled in the third, with a Blake Lansing squeeze bunt plating Wilhelmi while an error scored Nic Fellom, who was on to run for Roberts.

An Adan Medina base hit and a bases-loaded walk to Janier Puente in the fifth drove in the final two Bluejay runs.

Whiton had two singles and two steals, with Roberts notching a single and a double. Medina, Wilhelmi, Puente, Kyle Nevitt and Kade VanKirk all had base hits, with Medina tallying two RBIs and Roberts, Puente and Lansing one each. Wihelmi had two steals and Fellom one.

Nevitt collected the win in six innings on the hill. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out one. Whiton earned a save after yielding two hits and striking out two in one inning.

Daley was the loser. He was tagged for three runs (two earned) on six hits and two strikeouts, with Justin Cox tossing two innings and surrendering two runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out two.

Perry moved into a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth against Atlantic when Lansing’s double was followed by a Medina base hit. VanKirk singled home one run, with a sacrifice fly from Puente plating another.

Atlantic countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, then added six in the fith and one more in the sixth to open a 10-2 advantage.

Medina reached on a two-base outfield error with two out in the seventh, with a Brandon Kenyon RBI-single scoring the final Perry run.

VanKirk was 3-for-4, with Lansing, Kenyon, Wilhelmi and Roberts adding singles. Lansing also had a double.

Puente went 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and six walks with three strikeouts. Alex Long tossed 1.1 innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) on four hits, four walks and one strikeout, with Lansing touched for a run on three hits and one strikeout in one inning on the bump.

Brandon Holmes was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Trojans wile Holmes Walker added a double.

Holmes was the winner, throwing six inning of two-run ball. He allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out three, with Seth Nelson allowing an unearned run on a hit while fanning one in one inning.

Perry will visit Gilbert Tuesday before hosting ADM Wednesday.
