WOODWARD — The sun was in the sky, but a chill breeze was blowing throughout the Hugh Cavanaugh Relays in Woodward, the destination for both Perry track teams.

Host Woodward-Granger won the girls team title with 165 points, with Southeast Valley edging Perry, 140-137, for second while Des Moines Christian placed fourth with 74 points. The boys crown went to DMC, who scored 151 points. SE Valley (142.5), W-G (133), Perry (130) and the W-G junior varsity (9.5) completed the field.

“The 4×800 and 4×400 relays were exciting races,” Perry girls head coach Matt Hardy said. “Emma Olejniczak in the 4×800 and Sid Vancil 4×400 ran very strong anchor legs to secure victories right at the line. Emma took us from second to first and Sid from third to first.”

The duo teamed with Haley Vaughn and Breanna Penenger, winning the 4×400 in 4 minutes, 32.32 seconds and the 4×800 in 10:45.67.

Haley Vaughn awaits Sid Vancil’s handoff for Perry, and Kaitlyn Peters waits for Emma Drake to pass the baton for W-G in the 4×800.

Vancil also won the 800, in 2:35.76, with Alejandra Rivera sixth in 3:12.77 while Penenger claimed the 400 low hurdles in 1:18.92.

“Sid looked dominate in the 800 and had a great opening carry in the 4×800, and it was nice to have Breanna back after she took time off to play the title role in the Peter Pan musical,” Hardy said.

Vaughn was first (1:06.07) and Olejniczak fourth (1:10.98) in the 400, with Rachel Kinney fourth in both the 100 (14.2) and 200 (30.36). Emma Humpal was fifth in the 100 in 15.35 seconds.

“Haley (Vaughn) continues to have early season success and Rachel (Kinney) had been a nice addition to the team and continues to improve in her sprint events,” Hardy noted.

Perry’s Jered Narber and Woodward-Granger’s Payton Tague come out their blocks to start the shuttle hurdle relay at the Cavanaugh Relays in Woodward Thursday as Cole Snyder of Perry and W-G’s Ian Thompson await their legs.

Joselyn Carrillo was third in the 3200 in 13:44.43, with Jaky Castaneda fourth (6:35.28) and Patricia Torres sixth (7:41.49) in the 1500 for the Jayettes while Zoe Gordan used a 21.68 timing to place fourth in the 100 hurdles.

The foursome of Rivera, Isabel Saemisch, Damaris Robles and Castaneda gave Perry first place points in the distance medley after crossing in 5:12.11.

“Damaris had a great carry in the distance medley, positioning Jaky to anchor us to a win,” Hardy said.

Humpal, Saemisch, Robles and Kinney were third in the 4×100 (1:00.32), with Narale Cerna, Sophie Prombo, Star Love and Aliece Fox fourth in the 4×200 (2:15.09) while Humpal, Robles, Kinney and Saemisch finished third in the sprint medley (2:13.48).

Hardy also noted the top three efforts of Rylynn Gilmore, Gordon and Prombo in their field events, saying their results “played a large role in our success.”

Prombo cleared 4 feet, 2 inches for second in the high jump while Gordon flew 11’11 for second in the long jump. Gilmore was second in the shot put at 31’2-1/2 and third in the discus at 81’7, with Adrian Thompson sixth in the event at 58’11.

Zach Stewart takes the baton from Brandon Kenyon in the 4×800 at the Cavanaugh Relays in Woodward Thursday.

The Bluejays finished 21 points from first place, with two disqualifications for dropped batons in relays looming large, head coach Ben Coy said.

“That will haunt you in a meet with eight teams, so when there are only four teams and you are counting on scoring high in those two events (the 4×200 and distance medley), that will hurt the overall score,” he stated.

Perry found success in several individual events, with Reece Dunlap first (23.43) and Adan Medina second (24.19) in the 200 while Dunlap crossed first (53 seconds) and Medina third (54.07) in the 400. Dunlap won the 100 (11.4), with Justin Stammer fifth (12.52) while Juma Bushiri and Zach Stewart placed 2-4 in the 800 in 2:11.36 and 2:25.08, respectively.

Jered Narber was fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 18.81 ticks, with Eduardo Sanchez placing fifth in the 3200 in 12:31.54, while Brandon Kenyon won the 400 low hurdles in his first try in the race this season, crossing in 59.44.

Senior Rachel Kinney races to the finish line in the 200 dash.

Kenyon, Bushiri, Stewart and Zachary Thompson won the 4×800 in 8:55.75, with Thompson, Medina, Alexis Garrido and Kaleb Olejniczak claiming the 4×400 in 3:40.15.

Mana Martinez, Donald Chavez, Dunlap and Stammer were third in the 4×100 (47.68), with Martinez, Olejniczak, Garrido and Nic Fellom third in the sprint medley (1:44) while the shuttle hurdle quartet of Narber, Devon Archer, Cole Snyder and Kato Dougan crossed third in 1:20.52.

Perry had their best outing in the field events, with Dougan second and Chavez sixth in the long jump after the former flew 18’2-1/4 and the latter 17’3. Luke Holtorf was third in the shot put with a heave of 36’8-1/2 and sixth in the discus with a throw of 93’5 while Tyler Soll placed fifth in the shot put at 33’3-1/2.

Both Perry teams will visit Carroll Monday before hosting the Bluejay/Jayette Relays Thursday. Boone, Carroll and Norwalk are expected to send boys teams to the meet, with the girls side to include Clarke, Greene County, North Polk, Roland-Story and Winterset.
