Nearly 40 Perry High School students competed in 21 events Thursday and Friday at the Iowa SkillsUSA 2015 contests in Ankeny at the Des Moines Area Community College campus, on the Dallas County Fairgrounds in Adel and at the Kirkwood Community College campus.
The PHS students were among about 400 high school and junior college students from across the state who vied for a chance to continue to next month’s SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Ken.
“The SkillsUSA competitions are unique,” said Dale Schumacher of Perry, state director of Iowa SkillsUSA and longtime PHS technology instructor. “Technical experts from labor and industry have designed the contests to include a variety of skills that are identified for entry-level employment, rather than gearing the events to what is taught in a particular training program. This is a direct reflection of the value of the student to industry.”
PHS Technology Instructors Darin Steva and Curt Cornelius led this year’s contingent of 37 students on the two-day competition. Contest results and more pictures from the events will follow in an update.
