Perry tailback Donald Chavez runs upfield on this second quarter carry against host DC-G last season, Chavez had 59 yards in the game.

LAST MEETING — DC-G, helped by three Perry turnovers, recorded a 31-0 victory. Perry passed for 62 yards and ran for 98 but could not find the end zone, with the Mustangs throwing for 63 yards but rushing for 176 and four touchdowns.

ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — Perry has yielded 41 points in each of their two District 2 contests so far while scoring only 17 points against Ballard and just seven at Boone.

Perry has thrown for 491 yards but have only 426 yards on the ground. Alexis Garrido is 37-79-2 for the 491 yards and five TDs.

Reece Dunlap and Brandon Kenyon have 16 receptions apiece, with Dunlap gaining 244 yards and Kenon 230. Dunlap has three TDs and Kenyon two, with both scoring on long pass plays.

Garrido’s 96 yards and one score of 38 carries leads the Perry rushing list, with Dunlap (22-76) and Donald Chavez (33-45, 1 TD) second and third on the sheet.

Dunlap — who has a 95-yard kick return TD — has three of the six interceptions Perry has made, with the team having also fallen on six fumbles.

Mana Martinez (29.5), Connor Kenyon (29) and Kaleb Olejniczak (28) are the leading tacklers.

Kicker German Alvarenga is 9-of-9 on PATs and 2-of-2 on field goals while averaging 38.4 yards per punt.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS — DC-G opened their season by whipping host ADM, 35-0. They followed up with a win that resonated statewide, a 10-7 victory over visiting Pella that snapped the 42-game winning streak for the three-time defending state champs. The Mustangs own D2 wins of 31-12 over Greene County and of 40-7 at Ballard.

Damon Clapper is 33-69-5 for 499 yards and six TDs and has rushed 46 times for 256 yards and five scores.

Garret Belzer (8-198, 3 TDs), Thomas Erickson (9-149, 2 TDs) and Tanner Epple (9-81, 1 TD) are the lead receivers.

Epple has 380 rush yards and two scores on 64 carries, with Luke Fisher running 35 times for 97 yards and a TD.

The defense has intercepted six passes, with Tyler Cooney returning a fumble 74 yards for six points.

Trent Carpenter (27.5), Coty Lemon (25) and Rowan Collins (24.5) are the leading defenders. Lemon has three sacks and seven tackles for a loss, with Collins making two sacks.

Kicker Dustin James is 12-of-14 on PATs but 4-of-4 on field goals, with a long of 34.

OUTLOOK — The Mustangs will enter the Bluejay Homecoming game brimming with confidence while nothing-to-lose Perry will be trying to stay close through the first half to put pressure on the guests. DC-G hosts sixth-ranked Webster City Sept. 28 and Perry will be hoping to catch the Mustangs looking ahead.

The last time a team visited Dewey Field ranked fifth in the state was Sept. 23, 2011. The result? Perry stunned Newton, 21-7. If history is to repeat itself, the Bluejays must somehow rush for enough yards to keep DC-G from flooding the rush lanes to besiege Garrido and then hit several big plays, which Dunlap and Kenyon are capable of doing.
